Our initiative "Rettet die Knolle!" (Save the spuds!)

The special week is taking place as part of the nationwide initiative „Rettet die Knolle!“ (Save the spud!)► .
In 2025, many regions in Germanry harvested an especially large amount of potatoes – which is, in itself, good news. However, the market and demand were unable to fully absorb the large quantities: storage facilities filled up quickly, prices fell, and not all potatoes could be sold as food. As a result, surplus quantities were sometimes used for energy production or remained unsold, even though they were perfectly suitable for consumption.

The “Save the spud!” initiative addresses this issue: 36 German student service organisations are focussing on potatoes as a food making use of existing regional food resources and jointly taking responsibility. Participating means taking part.
